SWIR—the light that reveals a different world!

Did you know? Beyond the visible spectrum of light, there is a magical kind of light called SWIR (Short Wave Infrared). It has a wavelength range of 1.1-2.5 microns, and it is a type of electromagnetic radiation that lies between visible light and mid-infrared

What can SWIR do? You might be surprised to find out that it can let you see many things that you normally can't see. For example:

  SWIR can penetrate through haze, smoke, water vapor and other atmospheric scattering agents, letting you see clear distant views

  SWIR can penetrate through glass, plastic, plant leaves and other materials, letting you see hidden objects behind them

  SWIR can identify different minerals, compounds, biological tissues and other substances, letting you see their characteristic spectra

  SWIR can use the night sky radiance, letting you see targets in the dark

How are these functions achieved? Well, SWIR imaging uses the SWIR photons that are reflected or emitted by objects, and captures and processes them with special sensors and lenses. The most common sensor used in SWIR is InGaAs (Indium Gallium Arsenide) sensor, which can cover the typical SWIR band and extend from 550nm to 2.5 microns without the need for cryogenic cooling. The lenses need to be specially designed, optimized and anti-reflective coated for the SWIR band.

So, what are some application scenarios of SWIR imaging? The answer is: too many to count! Whether it is industrial, military, medical, agricultural, artistic, environmental and other fields, you can find SWIR imaging in action. Let's take a look at some specific examples:

  In the art field, SWIR imaging can be used for authentication and restoration of paintings and more. For example, in painting restoration, SWIR can see through the paint layers and observe the original sketches and modifications of the painter.
